Ulundu Vadai / Medhu Vadai

  • 1 cup of urad dal
  • 1 finely chopped onion
  • 2 chopped chillies 
  • 1 tsp of peppercorn ( optional)
  • 1 tsp of corn flour
  • A pinch of asafoetida 
  • Handful of Curry leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for deep frying


1. Soak urad dal with enough water for 2 hours.

2. Drain the water and grind it without adding water (just sprinkle water to make it as fine paste)

3. Add onion, chillies, pepper corn, curry leaves, asafoetida, corn flour and salt into the batter. mix well.

4.Heat oil in the pan, grease the zip lock bag with little water. take a small potion of batter, pat it flat in zip lock/plastic cover, using your finger make a hole in the centre.

5.Gently transfer it into the oil and fry untill golden brown colour.

6.Serve Medhu vadai / ulundhu vadai with coconut chutney
